The French word for egg is “ œuf ” [œf] is a masculine noun “ un œuf ” the plural is “les œufs.”

The final consonant of the words œuf is pronounced when used in the singular. Therefore, œuf are pronounced [œf] like the number neuf (nine). In the plural, however, the final consonant is not pronounced. Instead, by closing the vowel, we say [ø] for œufs; the word then rhymes with feu.
