When to use “à, en, au, aux” before cities or countries?

When to use " à "

We use “à” before a city.

  1. J’habite à Paris
    I live in Paris
  2. Je vais à Milan
    I’m going to Milan
  3. Je suis à New York
    I’m in New York

When to use " en "

  • We use “en” before a feminine country (most countries ending in -e are feminine).
    E.g. La France, La Russie, La Chine, L’Algérie.

    Exceptions: Le Mexique, Le Cambodge, Le Zimbabwe, Le Mozambique, Le Suriname, Le Belize.

  • Before Countries starting with a vowel.
    E.g. en Iraq, en Iran, En Afghanistan, en Inde
  1. J’habite en Espagne
    I live in Spain
  2. Je vais en France
    I’m going to France
  3. Je suis en Italie
    I’m in Italie

When to use " au "

We use “au” before a masculine country.

Exception: Masculine countries starting with a vowel (en Iraq)

  1. J’habite au Maroc
    I live in Morocco
  2. Je vais au Japon
    I’m going to Japan
  3. Je suis au Brésil
    I’m in Brazil

When to use " aux "

We use “aux” before countries in the plural.

  1. J’habite aux États-Unis
    I live in the United States
  2. Je vais aux Pays-bas
    I’m going to the Netherlands
  3. Je suis aux philippines
    I’m in the Philippines
