In French, there are two very similar verbs that mean “to remember” – “se souvenir” and “se rappeler”. While they are close in meaning, there is an important difference in how they are used grammatically. This short quiz will test your knowledge on when to use each verb properly.

Before taking the quiz, it is highly recommended that you review the lesson on “The Difference Between ‘Se Souvenir’ and ‘Se Rappeler’“. This lesson clearly explains when to use “se souvenir” versus “se rappeler” depending on if the object is a noun or verb. It also covers special cases where “se rappeler de” is required.

With this foundation on the distinction between these two verbs, you will be well prepared to demonstrate your understanding in the following quiz. Pay close attention to the object that follows each verb and think about whether it is a noun or verb. Apply the rules outlined in the lesson to select the right form of “remember” in French. Good luck!

Why is this marked as correct? I thought you didn’t use se rappeler with an infinitive?

Which phrase uses “se rappeler” correctly?
    b) Il se rappelle voyager en Europe.
    Correct answer.
    a) Je me rappelle de son prénom.

In French, “se rappeler” is typically used without the preposition “de” when followed by a direct object. However, when “se rappeler” is followed by an infinitive verb, it doesn’t require “de” either, but the sentence should describe something the subject remembers doing.

      b) Il se rappelle voyager en Europe.
This phrase is marked correct because “se rappeler” is followed by the infinitive “voyager,” correctly indicating that he remembers traveling in Europe.
On the other hand, in your second example:

      a) Je me rappelle de son prénom.
This is incorrect because “se rappeler” should not be used with “de”. The correct phrase would be “Je me rappelle son prénom.” You use “de” with verbs like “se souvenir de” (e.g., “Je me souviens de son prénom”).
