1- After a negative: " de "

When to use “Du or De”

NOTE : De -> d’ when followed by a vowel

J’ai un chien  ➡

Je n’ai pas de chien
I don’t have a dog

Tu fais du piano  ➡

Tu ne fais pas de piano
You don’t play the piano

Il a des amis  ➡

Il n’a pas d’amis
He doesn’t have friends

2- After adverbs of quantity: " de "

Moins de
Plus de
Autant de
Un peu de
Assez de
Pas mal de
Beaucoup de
Tellement de
Trop de

Less than
More than
As much as
A little bit of
Quite a bit of

A lot of

Too much

Tu veux du pain ?
Tu veux un peu de pain ?
Do you want a little bit of bread ?

J’ai de l’argent
J’ai beaucoup d’argent
I have a lot of money

Vous avez de la chance

You are so lucky

When to use "Du"

We use Du: (when NOT following a negative or an adverb of quantity)

“Du” is the contraction of de+le

Je veux du pain: I want some bread
Elle fait du violon: she plays the violin
